Description
ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE BLUE TRANSFER-PRINTED CERAMIC JUGS / PITCHERS, LOT OF FOUR, comprising one Mason's Ironstone example featuring Chinoiserie-style scene featuring two women and cranes with intertwined handle having foliate molded terminals and impressed radiating floral mark to base, one example with deer and sheep in fields before a country house and church, one example featuring fruit image to one side and reverse with child trying to capture birds having fruit and floral border decoration, and one with" Mosaic Tracery" pattern featuring a floral basket and bold scroll designs. "Mosaic Tracery" example attributed to Ralph & James Clews, Cobridge; G. M. & C. J. Mason, Lane Delph/Fenton, England; and others. First half 19th century. 5 1/8" to 8 7/8" H.
Two undamaged; child and bird example with an approximately 6" L radial hairline extending from base up side with moderate wear to rim; scroll and floral example having moderate chip to interior spout edge.
Literature: Transferware Collectors Club database pattern #3329, #4667, #17584; Mason's example parallels image Godden - Mason's China and the Ironstone Wares p. 171, pl. 252.
Provenance: From the Robert Sears and late Harold Tither III collection, Somers, CT.
