Description
ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE PEARLWARE BLUE TRANSFER-PRINTED AMERICAN HISTORICAL CERAMIC PLATES, LOT OF THREE, comprising one scalloped rim example featuring "NO GAINS WITHOUT PAINS. / FRANKLINS / MORALS." portraying figures performing outdoor work, one example with "American Villa" pattern featuring figures with donkey in foreground and mansion in background, and one example depicting figures landing at Plymouth Rock with "AMERICA / INDEPENDENT / JULY 4 / 1776" and "WASHINGTON / Born 1732 / Died 1799" printed in cartouches on border. Marks include printed pattern names and banner with "ENOCH WOOD & SONS / BURSLEM". Together with a plate having black transfer image of a tall-masted ship flying a British flag with various maritime articles below. Four pieces total. Davenport, Longport; Enoch Wood & Sons, Burslem; Bourne, Baker & Bourne, Fenton, England. First half 19th century. 8 1/2" to 10 1/2" D.
Three undamaged, except some having minimal short scattered scratches from use; Franklin's Morals example mostly undamaged having two minor bruises to foot ring.
Literature: Transferware Collectors Club database pattern #1791, #2128, #6270.
Provenance: From the Robert Sears and late Harold Tither III collection, Somers, CT.
Condition
Three undamaged, except some having minimal short scattered scratches from use; Franklin's Morals example mostly undamaged having two minor bruises to foot ring.
