Description
A Louis XVI late 18th century French gold mounted vernis martin and pique work snuffbox, probably Paris circa 1775 Of circular form the pull-off lid with an inset graphite and watercolour on paper study of peasants dancing and enjoying libations on a log, glazed. The lid and base with chased trailing rosettes and leaves. The interior lined with tortoiseshell. The sides and base with dark green vernis martin, with inlaid gold pique work. The base mount marked indistinctly twice, possibly that of the discharge mark of Jean Baptist Fouache (reg. 18 Nov 1774). Diameter – 8 cm / 3.05 inches
