Superb and rare Mettlach beer stein, Villeroy & Bosch, Germany, a sterling silver lid with figural finial dated 1895, Mauser Manufacturing Company, surmounting the large, 7.0 liter stein hand decorated by C.Warth (Christian Warth, active at Mettlach 1854-1892) showing the images of two period dressed ladies,coat of arms of the German states in relief at top and base, marked underfoot with the Mettlach castle, impressed Mettlach over VB, impressed 1161, Villeroy & Bosch green logo, "Made in Germany", impressed "Cegen Nachbildung, Geschutzi", 1/8" chip at rim, black light examination showing no other loss, lid: 23.9ozt, 25.5"h, 9.5"w, 8"d, 11lbs ***Provenance: Given by Peter Doelger (1832-1912) owner and operator of The Peter Doelger Brewery, New York City, to his son Charles Peter Doelger upon his 1895 marriage to Lillian Woerz, daughter of Ernest G.W. Woerz of Beadleston & Woerz Brewery, New York, and handed down within the Doelger family until this sale. The stein lids bears the monogram of each.
