Pennsylvania German Blanket Chest with Fraktur

Lot 0073 Details

Description
DESCRIPTION: A Pennsylvania German decorated blanket chest circa 1828 with a Reading (Ritter) printed and hand colored fraktur taufschein glued to the inside lid. simple red painted six-board chest with black-painted half spindles Left handed till and large strap hinges. The Magdalena is scratched and written twice into the surface along with the date of 1828. The Ritter printed fraktur records the birth and baptism of Maria Sensenally (?) who was born in the city of Lebanon in Lebanon County in 1804. The scrivener is unknown. There is an additional label on the chest recording the transfer of the chest from the A.H. Heilman firm in Montoursville (located in northern Pa.) to the Hawthorne furniture company in Bainbridge. Hawthorne furniture was among the longest lived furniture makes in Lancaster County and they are documented as having produced blanket chests. This label, however, dates from the late 19th or more likely early 20th century. It is possible that the chest was sent to Hawthornes for some updating. The strap hinges on the chest are exceeding large and typical of 18th century work while the chest is definitely 19th century so it is possible that Hawthornes replaced the hinges on this piece. Includes key. MEASUREMENTS: 48-3/4" wide x 23-3/4" deep x 28-3/4" high. CONDITION: Very good. Wear and losses to paint. Toning to fraktur. IMPORTANT: Before bidding, please read the terms and conditions. When you registered for the auction you agreed to these terms and will be required to comply with them.
