    Description: Month of May. Boy's Day Kabuto (helmet) with Irises. Kakejiku (vertical hanging scroll), ink and colours on silk in silk mounts.
    Date: Early 20th century
    Condition: Overall - Tear at the top, light soiling. Image - minor spots.
    Size: Overall - 187 x 29.5 cm. Image - 110.5 x 20 cm

    Originally celebrated in the house of warriors, Boy's Day (Tango no Sekku) is dedicated to wishes of health and happiness for boys. Today it is more universally known as Children’s Day (Kodomo no Hi) and is celebrated on May 5th every year.

    Families may display a samurai doll or the traditional Japanese military helmet, kabuto, due to their tradition as symbols of strength and vitality. The symbolic flower of Tango no Sekku is a type of iris called shobu. The shobu has long leaves that resemble swords and boys traditionally take shobu leaf baths on this day. Iris leaves are also hung under the eaves of houses which is believed to be able to drive away evil spirits.; Artist: Shien
