  • Description: An exotic, fun and colorful patterned Victorian sugar bowl and milk pitcher by W.H. Grindley and Tunstall. They have a nice size to them. The ceramic molded milk pitcher and sugar bowl have a thin glaze that has been decorated with a brown transfer of birds and water plants with a stylized Japanese border. Both pieces have a shallow four footed border on the base, and faux bamboo handles with transfer designs. The sugar bowl has a matching rectangular lid with a handle. The lid has a hole in it for venting. There are transfer marks on the bases. The sugar bowl base has the words BURMAH and the manufacturer’s name which is barely readable. It should read W.H. Grindley and Tunstall. There is also a diamond shape with an R in the center, a ship above a globe and a red production number (12). The pitcher has the production number 11 in blue and the diamond shape with the R in the center on its base. MEASUREMENTS Sugar bowl: 7” 17.8 cm) wide x 4” (10.2 cm) deep x 6 ½” (16.5 cm) tall. Total weight 2 lb 2.5 oz (980 g) CONDITION There is wear, staining and glaze loss at the spout of the pitcher, as well as staining around the pitcher’s handles. There is a crack that starts around the top of the pitcher’s handle that extends down to about midway between the handle is attached to the body. This crack is visible on the inside, as well. There are no other no chips or breaks on the pitcher and none on the sugar bowl. The lid of the sugar bowl has slight staining. Both pieces have slight wear scratches, and manufacturers errors, such as spotting and lines in the transfers. They both look good for the age. A great pair of Aesthetic Movement pieces to add to a collection or add to so many different decors.
