Description
PENNSYLVANIA FOLK ART FRAKTUR BIRTH AND BAPTISMAL RECORD, watercolor and ink on paper, central reserve inscribed for Johann Nicolaus, born September 16, 1773, baptized October 3, 1773, parents Johann and Elisabeth Barbara Nicolaus, sponsors John Peter and Christina Schilp, flanked by flowering vines, three-story structure below, rosette in each corner. Housed under glass in a later frame. Probably Northampton Co. Dated 1773. 12 1/4" x 7 1/2" sheet, 14 1/2" x 9 1/2" OA.
Very good visual condition, losses to black ink to two vertical strips above reserve, and each rosette center, scattered foxing/toning, a few later penciled numbers below reserve.
Provenance: From an Upstate New York private collection.
Catalogue Note: John Peter Schilip is recorded serving as a sponsor at the Dryland Union Lutheran Church, Hecktown, Northampton Co., PA. He is also buried in the church cemetery.
