Lot 0034A Details

This charming little (just 2-1/2 inches high) jug has a lot going for it in a small package with its cute coopered barrel shape, bird’s beak spout, twig handle and beautiful hand-painted image of a bullfinch on a branch. The firm that made these charming jugs, Royal Worcester, (designated “Royal” since 1788), is one of the world’s most renowned porcelain makers.; This jug is signed by the artist, W(illiam) Powell, who, according to the Museum of Royal Worcester, worked for the Royal Worcester pottery factory for a full half-century, from 1900 to 1950. The museum notes that Powell was “a great expert” on English birds and spent his spare time photographing them. Worcester placed him where the public could see him working at his painting desk. “He was a cheerful man who got on well with the public, who in turn would buy his pieces in the (factory) Shop,” the museum says.; This piece has the Royal Worcester mark on the bottom that dates it to 1935. (The number 51 in the middle of the mark is simply a company reference to the year 1751, when the company was originally founded as the Worcester Porcelain Company. The company has long been fighting with Royal Crown Derby for the title of the oldest porcelain firm in Britain.) Also appearing on the bottom is the word, “Bullfinch.”; As it has no flaws, I would say it is in superb condition.
