Lot 0030A Details

On page 92 (fig. 93) of Clive Mason Pope’s “A-Z of Staffordshire Dogs,” the author describes a similar pair of comforter spaniels as “the only model…which support large spill vases.”; In more modest homes in Victorian times, spill vases were used to hold long rolls of paper to light additional fires, pipes or lamps, from an already lit fireplace, as matches were expensive. As they were not glazed inside and therefore could not hold water, they were (and are) not suited as live flower vases; however, they are wonderful for dried flower arrangements.; This model in the white, orange and green painting can be found on page 36 in Adele Kenny’s book, “Staffordshire Spaniels.” She says “spill vases were above all, functional, but the Staffordshire potters drew upon an intimate acquaintance with the country farm house and devised decorative spill vases which, like the majority of their figures, were designed to rest against mantel walls.” In 1997, when her book was published, Kenny put a value on a single model of a seated comforter spaniel and spill vase combination of $1,000 to $1,200.; This dog, dating from around 1870 to 1880, is in excellent overall condition. There is some general crazing under the glaze, which is to be expected in pottery of this age and type and which was mainly displayed near the fireplace. There are just a few minor paint losses. There are a few kiln effects, but they are inherent in large pieces of Victorian pottery. However, there are no issues that would take away from one’s enjoyment of this piece.; It measures about 13 inches high, 8 inches wide and 3-3/4 inches deep.
