after STEWART, William (active late 1700's - early 1800's).
New York City: Jamaica Bay, Queens. Plan of Jamaica Bay.
Ink manuscript map on wove paper, backed with period linen.
New York, 1845.
23 1/2" x 18" sheet.
Captioned in lower margin "Surveyed and laid down by a Scale of 40 chs. To an Inch by Willm Stewart Surveyor Oct. 9th 1797" and in upper lefthand corner "Surveyor Generals Office | Albany May 10th 1845 | I certify that I have compared this Map with the original on file in this Office and find the same to be a correct copy thereof"; toning, scattered spotting, small portion of upper left corner extended, remnants of 3 wax seals along upper margin. Loosely laid down on sturdy card and enclosed in mylar. (65B1C) This finely drawn manuscript map of Jamaica Bay and the general barren area is an official New York State Surveyor General's copy of an earlier survey laid down by William Stewart in 1797. Several noted landmarks include: a growing Jamaica Town, Whitehead Cornell's house in South Hempstead, Duryea's Mill, Bett's Inn, Mr. Genet's house, Mrs. Martin's house, Hook Creek, the head of Flushing Creek, Rockaway Beach, and the County Road to New York.
