Lot 0018 Details

The beautiful town of Sorrento is set on a hill facing the Mediterranean Sea and is the entrance to the famed Amalfi Coast. A two-hour train ride south of Rome, Sorrento is a pleasant, if touristy spot. I can just imagine sipping wine here on a garden terrace, taking in the view and the aroma of lime and orange orchards. But I digress…; Sorrento also has been famous for its wood work for centuries and even has a museum devoted to the art of marquetry and inlay. This is a subtle and difficult art of putting together pieces of different colored wood to create complex and beautiful designs. Their artists used special local woods to create colorful inlays without using any artificial colorings by using wood veneers with different colors. These include maple, rosewood, white poplar, briar, olive wood, ebony and burl elm.; In this charming example of this art form, the artist used multiple exotic woods to create a fantasy world where winged cherubs are busily making a pleached allee, the centuries-old horticultural practice of training trees to create shaded paths. In this dream-like scene, the cherubs are also hanging baskets, carrying flowers or mixing ingredients in large pots. A large dog is observing these actions from his position on a cushion.; The artist created a mosaic-like border, filled with ducks spaced in between scrolls and flowering branches. There are several intricate borders between the central scene and the edge of the wooden plaque. The entire appearance of the plaque has a traditional, classical ambiance to it.; The workmanship on this piece is superb, as is the coloring of the long, flowered canopy. This plaque dates to around 1880.; It is in excellent condition for its age and type. I have had the plaque professionally restored and polished. There are two old holes where screw eyes were used at some time for hanging, and it can again be used in this way, or one could simply rest it on a small easel or quality plate stand.; It measures 18-1/4 inches wide and 4-5/8 inches high.
