Lot 0001 Details

One of strongest characteristics of the Victorian era was its emphasis on romanticism. This tray epitomizes that feeling, with its hand-painted and hand-gilded depiction of a romantic architectural gem from another era, Buckland Abbey.; Today the Abbey is owned by the National Trust for Places of Historic or Natural Beauty, but is was founded by Cistercian monks in 1278. It was the home of Sir Frances Drake at one point. The tray shows only a portion of the abbey for artistic and dramatic effect. On the bottom of the painted scene and just above the border are the words, “Buckland Abbey” and some letters that I cannot decipher.; The abbey features arched windows with elaborate pieces of leaded and stained-glass windows. There is an arched doorway with a large wooden door, and the abbey itself has a bell tower rising above the scene. The dark mood of the scene is powerful in its depiction of an ancient place in its natural setting. On the grounds of the abbey are magnificent trees and shrubs, with a lone figure walking in the background.; The tray is scalloped and shaped wonderfully with a wide border that was intricately gilded in gold leaf. The pattern is ornate, with feathers one near the other. The gilding harmonizes well with the somber colors of the landscape and the gilded stone on the abbey. The artist gilded this stone work to suggest light reflecting on it. In front and in the shadow of the tower and the steep hall roof is another section that remains in shadow.; This is one of the most beautiful and romantic papier mache trays I have come across. As it is a very large piece, it is a substantial piece of art that could well be hung on a wall.; The condition is excellent for its age and type. There is some scattered crazing, which is typical for early papier mache trays. There also is a small amount of pitting, mostly around the center. However, the old varnish has protected it well. On the back there is evidence that there were attachments for hanging the tray, but these are no longer there. The shaped border is stepped above the surface of the tray, giving it an additional decorative appeal.; It measures nearly 31 inches wide and 23-1/2 inches in height.
