Lot 0007 Details

19th century boxwood netsuke of an octopus amorously embracing an ama (girl diving for abalone shells) and gently caressing her private parts on the bottom while she seems to enjoy its attention. The netsuke is of shunga type, uncommon turn of the subject - usually an ama is trying to get rid of the cephalopod suitor. Great carving, wonderful faces - octopus seems to be surprised by its own success, beautiful wear and patina. Signed NOBUCHIKA on the bottom - the artist is listed on p. 833 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. Formerly in the Marcel Lorber Collection. Height 1 1/4 inches.
