Lot 0006 Details

18th century boxwood netsuke of a standing Dutchman with slightly idiotic country bumpkin expression on his face, his hat ridiculously low on the back of his head. The subject reflects Edo period Japanese attitude towards “Western barbarians” with documented instances of Dutch trade post delegation from the Deshima Island being ordered to dance foolishly during their annual visit to the Shogun’s court. Wonderful early carving, great face, deep differently sized himotoshi in accordance with the habit of the time, beautiful wear consistent with age, superb patina. Height 3 1/2 inches (8.9 cm).
