More about the artist:
Oil and acrylic paintings by Tomi Olson, president of the Redlands Art Association, will be featured in the Redlands Art Association Gallery from June 23 to July 11.
While she dabbled in art for much of her life, Olson started painting in earnest in the 1970s, while living in Honolulu. She said she was inspired by the beautiful blue of the skies, the exquisite blue-greens of the ocean and the lush greens of the tropical foliage.
She said the scenery awakened the creativity that had been with her since childhood when she drew, colored and painted in classes and in much of her free time. She said she adores scenery that includes remnants of the past.
OlsonÂ’s work was featured at the renowned Honolulu Zoo fence on Saturdays with work of other artists, and she was was able to critique and have her work critiqued by some of her favorites.
Hiroshi Tagami and Peter Hayward, both painters in oil and masters of light, were mentors as she began her artistÂ’s journey and while she was working full time in health care. Gloria Foss helped her understand color and continually pushed her to take a chance with it.
She had art instruction at ChicagoÂ’s Art Institute, while living there.
She has admired the work of California artists and taken classes from Karen Levi of Temecula, Elin Pendleton of Riverside and Dennis Hare of Mentone.
Her work hangs in international and local collections, including at Redlands Community Hospital and at the Redlands Art Association Art Center and Gallery.
When she came to California to work with Kaiser Permanente, Olson sought a local group of artists like she had in Hawaii. She said she found that group right away at Redlands Art Association.
