Lot 0007 Details

18th century Indian bronze votive sculpture representing Vitthali, who is regarded as a form of Vishnu. His name means “standing on a brick”, he is shown in characteristic stance with his hands on his hips and holding a devotional oil pot in his left hand. He is also known as Vithoba or Panduranga, and is worshipped in particular in Pandharpur, not far from Bombay. Panduranga/Vitthali is the reigning deity of Maharashtra, and his Bhakti cult (devotion as opposed to ritual) has few parallels. Classic sculpture with excellent casting and detailing, old collection paper label on the bottom, wonderful patina, pleasantly heavy. Traces of sandalwood paste used during worship. Height 3 3/4 inches.
