Lot 0075 Details

Early Showa period (1910s) Japanese mingei (Arts and Crafts) copper box with chased and enameled decoration of a flowering cherry tree. Wonderful combination of uchidashi (hammered-out) and moriage (piled-up) techniques: metal was raised from the opposite side and raised surface was subsequently heavily enameled and fired. Crisp work with thickly laid enamel, beautifully applied multiple colors, wonderful textured surface of the box, perfectly riveted corners, excellent patina, in great condition. The piece is definitely by the Ando workshop. Lined on the inside of both body and lid with red velvet. Length 6 3/4 inches, width 4 inches.
