Lot 0057 Details

Exceptionally carved and unusually large early 19th century staghorn netsuke of a whole himono (dried fish, looks like salmon to me). Perfectly captured essence of the object, unusual size stag antler material, superb carving with extraordinary mixture of realistic yet idiosyncratic approach, excellent depiction of its scales, great detailing - see two stretchers carved as bamboo stems that are used to open the belly of the fish allowing for it to dry. Himotoshi goes through the bridge under its cheeks, wonderful patina, very pleasant to hold. Signed MASAKAZU in rectangular reserve - the artist is discussed on p. 707 of NETSUKE & INRO ARTISTS AND HOW TO READ THEIR SIGNATURES by George Lazarnick. The carver is probably Masakazu of Nagoya as per the Meinertzhagen list reproduced on page 708. Superb sculpture. Length 8 5/8 inches (22 cm).
