1653 Surius Pilgrimage to Jerusalem Church Holy Sepulcher Dutch Franciscan

Bernard Surius was a 17th-century Dutch Franciscan monk who was the curator of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem. While working for the famous church, he published a ‘pilgrim’s guide’ to the church which also included anecdotes and stories of his experiences in Jerusalem.

‘Den Godtvruchtighen Pelgrim’ provides in-depth direction to those on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and seeks to quell many of the Calvinistic views that a pilgrimage to Jerusalem is simply ‘superstition’. He defends his stance on the importance of a Jerusalem pilgrimage by providing examples of illustrious royals and knights who have made the journey. But most importantly, Surius uses Old Testament scriptural references to show that the pilgrimage itself is pleasing to God. (van Eck)

This 1653 Brussels edition was published by Mommaert and includes illustrated plans of the church, portraits, and views of important icons of the church.
