1739 Astronomy Galileo Telescope Illustrated Zodiac MAPS Optics Pluche
Noël-Antoine Pluche was an early 18th-century French priest and historian who is most remembered today for his landmark work of natural history ‘Spectacle of Nature’. While this work would have significant influence on botanists and naturalists, Pluche designed the work to be for the general population, not of scientific merit. There was a time when Pluche himself called it ‘La physique des enfants’ or ‘physics of the children’. The main themes portrayed in this work are not simply of the physical, natural world. Take for instance the first volume – Pluche writes, “We are here only to be virtuous” – a moral vision on how we are to live. ‘Spectacle’ became a pragmatic work of theology through the lens of plants, animals, and the natural world.
This volume from the complete set of ‘Spectacle’ includes many fascinating topics such as origins of naming America, ancient astronomy, mythological tales of the Argonauts, effects of the moon on the earth, eclipses, Galileo and telescope technology, how to preserve fresh eggs, behavior of light, making and cooling liquor, how to use poisons, planetary orbit, making wax candles, invention of the Zodiac, plurality of worlds, and much more!
