Princess Diana Personal Bible & Cross

Lot 0160A Details

Description
Princess Diana's personal gift to a young girl she met and visited in Ormond Street hospital, London, 1995. A miniature Bible with original box and cross with the initials D S. It needs a good cleaning but you can see the following letters.words - D S (Diana Spencer). Gifted from Diana's Granny to Diana when she was a teenager. Diana shared with the family that she drew comfort from the words inside and treasured this little bible and used it a number of times when she was sad. Diana said that Lily could use it in early 1997 until she was well and that Diana would take it back when she was better, that never happened as Diana passed away mid 1997. It was left with Lily as a comfort through her illness. The Princess had a special connection to Great Ormond Street Hospital and used to visit there regularly officially and non-officially to give hope to children, as children were obviously very special to her. Dr. Charles West founded the Hospital for Sick Children on 14 February 1852 and it was the first hospital providing in-patient beds specifically for children in England. Despite opening with just 10 beds, it grew into one of the world's leading children's hospitals through the patronage of Queen Victoria, counting Charles Dickens, a personal friend of Dr. West, the Chief Physician, as one of its first fundraisers. Diana, Princess of Wales, served as president of the Hospital from 1989 until her death. When Prince Harry was admitted to the hospital she stayed with him. A plaque at the entrance of the hospital commemorates her services, as well as a bust in the lobby of the hospital chapel.
