Georgia or Florida, late 19th century, New York Beauty variation, appliquéd and pieced, nine squares separated by zigzag sashing and outer border, signed in one corner "Hattie Taylor", cotton, hand stitched and quilted, 74 x 74 in., overall good condition, fading, fugitive colors, wear, scattered light stains Provenance: Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Levon C. Register, Franklin Springs, Georgia Consignor purchased this quilt from the great granddaughter of Hattie Taylor. Hattie Taylor is listed in the 1870 Federal Census as 25 years old, born in Georgia and living in Fernandina, Florida. Her occupation listed as washerwoman.
