Description

CAESAR, Caius Julius (100-44 B.C) [Opera]London: Jacob Tonson, 1712. Folio (475 x 292 mm.) Engraved double-page title, portrait frontispiece of the Duke of Marlborough by Virtue after Kneller, 6 double-page maps, 81 plates, engraved head pieces and vignettes. Red straight-grain morocco with double gilt frame enclosing a decorative roll tool with rosettes in blind at corners, spine with raised bands and elaborate gilt panels at head and tail, remaining panels tooled in blind with gilt title in second and imprint in the sixth, gilt pattern on turn-ins, g.e. Condition: some light toning; rebacked with original spine preserved, corners worn. Provenance: John Jarrett (book label); C. Kalbfleisch (booklabel); old bookseller's label from The Brick Row Bookshop; E Joseph. Complete with the double-page plate depicting a bison, which is often lacking.
