Lot 0547 Details

**Originally Listed At $200**

South American, Peru, Upper / Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Shipibo peoples, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A wonderful pair of hand-built pottery vessels from the Shipibo peoples. The shorter vessel has a protruding foot beneath a wide, bell-shaped body, a tapered neck, and a flared rim. The cream-slipped surface is decorated with fine-line linear patterns, and the red-painted rim bears a series of M- and W-shaped motifs that perhaps symbolize abstract birds. The taller vessel has a slightly concave base, a rotund body, a tapered neck, and a thin rim surrounding a deep basin, all adorned in dense linear patterns. The abstract human face along the front of the neck has a protruding nose, petite eyes, and tab-shaped ears. Size of largest (face on neck): 6.5" W x 5.4" H (16.5 cm x 13.7 cm).

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection
