(1822-1893). Nineteenth President of the United States (1877-81); Union brigadier general severely wounded at South Mountain. Partly printed DS "R B Hayes" as President, 1p, 21"x16", Washington, DC, Jun 10, 1879. Embossed wafer seal affixed. Appointment of John T. Morgan of Illinois as "Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Territory of Idaho..." Countersigned by Secretary of State WILLIAM M. EVARTS (1818-1901), also having served as Attorney General in the administration of Andrew Johnson. Both have boldly signed. Fold separations with minimal paper loss; 1" bottom edge tear with no paper loss; light wear; minor foxing at bottom margin; else VG/Fine.
