A RUSSIAN ICON OF SAINT JOHN SIGNED & DATED 1885. Comprising a large and impressive icon rendered on an ornately incised gilt ground with faux cloisonné enameled borders executed in oil and in the western style. Here John holds a scroll whose text is a composite of the beginning words of Luke 3:8 "Bring forth therefor, fruits worthy of repentance…" and followed by Luke 3:9, "And now also, the axe is laid onto the root of the trees: every tree therefor, which brings not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire." Signed and dated lower right in Cyrillic, "1885 Iv[an] Podozhiy." Retaining the original varnish coat, would brighten if cleaned. 21 inches x 17 inches (53 x 44.5 cm).
