Exceptional Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, Manhattan, NY origin, probably Crolius Family, circa 1795, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout and footed base, decorated with an incised and cobalt-highlighted design of a curving stem bearing a large flower blossom with graduated petals, a smaller three-petaled blossom, and a series of leaves. Decoration includes highly unusual spotted decoration to the center of the primary blossom. Among the finest incised Manhattan jugs that we have offered in recent years, produced during a period of highly-refined stoneware production in the city, prior to the establishment of most or all impressed Manhattan potter's marks. Characteristic of this jug and other pieces from this period are exceptional color to both the clay and cobalt, elaborate and sure-handed incising, and masterful potting to the vessel. Base chips. A short line to base. A faint hairline to handle. A few minor handle nicks.
