Blue American Marine Cup Plate

Lot 0173 Details

Description
  • Title: Blue Historical Staffordshire Cup Plate: American Marine Full Border
  • Provenance: This Blue Historical Staffordshire Cup Plate in the American Marine pattern has the full border with medallions and rope. It is by Francis Morley & Co. c. 1850. BLUE is an unlisted color for this popular pattern. The cup plate measures 4” in diameter and is in excellent condition with no flaws. The central image is a large sailing ship. Cup plates were used when tea was served in handleless cups. The ceramic cups were so thin that they were often too hot to hold; the tea was poured into the bowl-like saucer for drinking and then the cup was set down in a cup plate to avoid marring the table or the tablecloth. An elegant way to drink tea!
