20th C. PNG Sepik River Wood Canoe Prow - Ancestors
Item Details
Description
**Originally Listed At $600**

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Sepik River, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden canoe prow of elaborate form, with three ancestor-like figures stacked atop one another, their faces dramatically carved, their bodies painted with bright, earthy pigment. The rugged terrain of Papua New Guinea means that the easiest form of travel for its native indigenous inhabitants is via dugout canoe, especially in the region around the long inland Sepik River. In the past and today, the prows of large canoes in this culture are carved, often in the form of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures with mystical connections or that represent clans. Size: 6.5" L x 11.5" W x 60" H (16.5 cm x 29.2 cm x 152.4 cm); 60.5" H (153.7 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Newport Beach, California, USA collection

All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
