Japanese Woodblock Prints Gekko, Ogata 1859-1920 Oban, dat. 1892
From the series "Nihon hanazue" (The Flowers of Japan). The woodblock print "Sakurada, Joshi Tojo" (Sakurada Gate, near the castle on the third day of the third month). Hiding under a straw mat, Arimura Jinzaemon prepares an attack on the Daimyo procession with a blizzard approaching. Signed: Gekko. Seal: Ogata Gekko. Publisher: Sasaki Toyokichi. Excellent and one of the best editions of this print, with extremely fine Gofun (snow), blind printing and black glossy print (sword and jacket), backed, slightly wavy and yellowed. Similar edition to BM 1906, 1220, 01781. (# 307)
