Lot 0165 Details
Description
An oil on canvas in the manner of Philip James de Loutherbourg, RA (1740-1812) (also known as "Philippe-Jacques" or "Philipp Jakob" "Lauterborough" and "the Younger"), this work shows three small figures -a man and a woman carrying an infant, suggesting the "Rest on the Flight into Egypt"- caught crossing a river in front of a ruined castle, just above a waterfall, in the middle of a tempest with a huge crooked tree looming over the scene. It's a typical, Romantic subject in this style, showing the power of nature and the inconsequence of humanity. Amsler & Ruthardt 80th anniversary label and undated bill of sale on reverse. the gallery was founded in 1860, so this would have passed through their hands in about 1940. 19th c. Stretcher is 18" X 24 1/4". CONDITION:
Condition
Paint surface needs to be cleaned. There are a number of old repairs which can be seen from the reverse, and the old in-painting is noticeable on the front.
