[American Whaling Ship Log Book, 1838]

Lot 0011 Details

Description
Manuscript log-book for the whaling brig William. Dated June 1838 through December 1838. Folio, 12.25" x 7.5". Brown ink on wove. 19 leaves. Bound in later plain cloth covers, covers a bit soiled, contents with light toning/foxing, small portion of second leaf removed (likely original as does not appear to cause any loss), Good. ********************** An interesting log-book of this whaling vessel which set out from Fall River, MA, in the Summer of 1838. Several stamps in the shape of a whale appear on several pages – appearing to signify the spotting or taking of a sperm whale. The log contains mostly observational entries such as weather, but also includes sightings and raisings of sperm whales, stops, repairs to the ship, and other notes – "... the Maria of New Bedford 380 Barrells she saw the Ann Maria cutting a while 4 days ago..."
