The Forty Martyrs of Sebastia, probably Greek Asia Minor, oil on hardwood panel, unframed, painted edge, 22" x 17 1/4". Cleaned and retouched.
The Christian Church recognized by canonization, the sacrifice of forty Roman soldiers who were condemned to die by the Roman Emperor in 320 AD, when they would not renounce their Christian faith.
