Item Details
Description
Medical Reference Inscribed by Mississippi Confederate Surgeon

being Analytical Compendium of the Various Branches of Medical Science for the Use and Examination of Students (Philadelphia: Blanchard and Lea, 1859), 974 pages, full calf, small octavo, the front pastedown is pencil-inscribed,"L. J. Wilson / Asst Surgeon / 42nd Miss Reg / Davis Brigade / Heth's Division / A P Hills Corp / Army, N. Va / Janry 2nd 1862" beneath "Boston Massachusetts" penned by an earlier hand, while Wilson repeats his military information in pencil on the back flyleaf.
Surgeon Wilson's regiment was as hard-fighting as any on either side, North or South. The 42nd Mississippi lost nearly half its strength at Gettysburg alone, and would be further reduced to surrender fewer than ten men at Appomattox. Wilson, of course, would have witnessed the carnage up close under the most trying of circumstances. After the war LaGrand Wilson wrote a The Confederate Soldier and History of a Southern PresbyterianFamily.
