Title: Typed transcripts of Bruce’s 1958 appearances at the Club 440 in North Beach, San Francisco
Place Published: [San Francisco?]
Publisher:
Date Published: 1958
Description:

59 pages on leaves typed on rectos only, comprising 17 pages for June 13, 1958 routine; 21 pages for October 7, 1958 show; 21 pages for October 25th, 1958 show, and several short routines. about a third of the pages with Bruce's holographic corrections and notations. 28x20.5 cm (11x8½"), binder with paper covers.

Rare original, annotated transcripts of Lenny Bruce's breakout performances in San Francisco. These dates at the historic San Francisco club marked the beginning of Bruce's rise into the "Big Time." Mona's Club 440 was San Francisco's first lesbian bar and possibly the first in the USA. Mona Sargent originally opened the bar in 1934 on Union Street as a bohemian hangout for artists and writers. By the time the club moved to 440 Broadway in 1939, Mona's had also become a mecca for lesbians, transgenders and male impersonators. Included is an original matchbook from the Club that Bruce apparently kept as a souvenir. On the front cover of the binder is written, in what appears to be Bruce's hand: "Lenny Bruce, part of transcription - other part sent to be copyrighted, L. Bruce." These appear to be the earliest documentation of Bruce's comedy routines available. The audio files in the Bruce archives at Brandeis University do not begin until his October 24, 1958 performance.
