1892 Tess d’Urbervilles Thomas Hardy Illustrated Victorian Novel Sexuality RARE
“The beauty or ugliness of a character lay not only in its achievements, but in its aims and impulses; its true history lay, not among things done, but among things willed.”
– Thomas Hardy, Tess of the d’Ubervilles
Thomas Hardy was an English author of the naturalist movement, although in several poems he displays elements of the previous romantic and enlightenment periods of literature, such as his fascination with the supernatural.
‘Tess of the d’Ubervilles’ was considered controversial when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual morals of late Victorian England. It initially appeared in a censored and serialized version, published by the British illustrated newspaper ‘The Graphic’ in 1891 and in book form in 1892.
This second U.S. edition includes the controversial material that was omitted from the first edition.
