Description
Two Nicholas II Silver Gilt and Cloisonne Enamel Napkin Rings, Moscow, fourth quarter 19th century, forming a near pair, the first 1898-1899, 88 zolotnik (.917) silver gilt, by Nikolai Alexeyev, h. 1-5/8", dia. 1-7/8", the second 1899-1908, 84 zolotnik (.875) silver gilt, the maker's mark rubbed, h. 1-1/2", dia. 1-7/8", each with a wide band of light blue, dark blue, turquoise, white and translucent red enamel flowers between pelleted turquoise enamel edges, 3.02 total t. oz.
Condition
First Ring: Overall Condition: Good. Two tiny losses to enamel in one of the blue circles at the border and one of the white flowers, with a very tiny dent to the twisted wire cell of one of the blue flowers. Otherwise in very good condition with a few scattered bubbles and very light crazing in spots, viewable only under 10x magnification. Gilding good. Marks (in separate cells near the edge): 1) the "88/St. George" combination fineness/Moscow city mark in use ca. 1897-1898, and 2) "NA" [Cyrillic] mark of N. Alexeyev. (Note that this ring is marked 88 zk., not 84 zk. as stated in the print and earlier online catalogues.) Second Ring: Overall Condition: Very Good. No losses or chips to the enamel noted. Fine bubbles scattered throughout, visible under 10x magnification. Gilding good. Marks (near the edge, the first in a separate cell): 1) the first "kokoshnik" mark in use 1899-1908, for items of 84 zk. silver, the assayer's initials rubbed but probably "IL" [Cyrillic] for Ivan Lebedkin of Moscow; 2) an indistinct maker's mark, possibly "-GT" [Cyrillic].
