Description

A mid Victorian 18ct gold emerald snake necklace. The emerald and foliate engraved locket, suspended from the textured scale motif snake head with chrysoberyl eyes and graduated emerald line crest, to the graduated snake-link chain. Length 38cms. Weight 28.7gms. With fitted case.

Condition

Overall condition good to fair. Some surface scratches, slight discolouration and minor dents in keeping with general age and wear.

Drop has glazed locket reverse.

Small fissure with slight discolouration to one side of the snake's face.

One tooth deficient, another by its side is dented.

Gems are in closed back settings, presumed foil back.

Possible replacement gems, wear and dents to the mounts.

Chrysoberyl are a light medium slightly greenish yellow hue. Moderate abrasion.

Emeralds appear s light medium slightly yellowish green through to deep medium slightly bluish green. Typical surface reaching features.

One emerald with chips at girdle extending to the crown facets.

Estimated dimensions of largest emerald 6.5 by 5.4mms.

Case appears re-fitted.
