Item Details
Description
A late Victorian gold diamond locket, circa 1875. The rose-cut diamond stylised foliate panel, atop the oval locket, opening to reveal a glazed photograph and period inscription, to the tapered surmount and near-period 15ct gold rope-twist necklace. Length of locket 5.4cms. Length of chain 52cms. Total weight 28.6gms. With fitted case.
Condition
  • Overall condition good. Some surface scratches/wear in keeping with general age and wear.
  • Diamond panel possible later addition.
  • Locket opens to reveal a photograph of an elderly lady to one side, with the other engraved 'In loving memory of Frances Cropper, died November 23rd, 1874'.
  • Diamonds well matched.
  • Diamonds bright.

  • Individual size and setting of rose-cut diamonds prevents accurate weight estimation and colour and clarity assessment.

  • Diamonds with some small inclusions, natural surface features and small cavities.
  • Chain stamped 15ct.
  • Locket tests as high carat gold, probably 15ct or 18ct gold with gilt.
  • Fellows uses a Thermo Scientific Nitron Handheld XRF Analyser to test metals. This technology is limited to examining metal to a depth of approximately 8 microns.
  • Fellows does not guarantee the standard of gold or platinum unless an item is hallmarked. Results from electronically tested items should only be used as a guide and with caution, as false readings are possible.
  • Condition reports are offered as a guide only and we highly recommend inspecting any lot to satisfy yourself as to its condition.
