Item Details
Description
Natural group of associated fossil vertebrae from a huge Elasmosaur marine reptile (Elasmosaurus sp.), Late Cretaceous Period, c. 73 – 65 million years ago. This rare association of fossil bones are from a type of plesiosaur called an Elasmosaur. The grouping is natural and still in the original plaster jacket as first collected. The surrounding sand matrix has been carefully removed to better expose the bones. A hardener was applied to the bones and matrix to make the entire piece stable and safe for display. The size of the vertebrae centra shows this is a plesiosaur of extreme size. The color is natural with only minor repair to the bones. When stood up on the stand and lit from above, the very high 3D relief of the bones makes the piece an incredibly impressive display specimen. An excellent specimen from a real-life sea monster of the prehistoric seas. 16 in x 16 overall (matrix included); vertebra centrum is 4 ½ in across. Ex French private collection.
