Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) -- Hand Painted

Lot 7004 Details

Description
This lot consists of a hand-painted mixed media (ink and watercolor) on canvas, framed beneath glass, hand signed "Picasso" in graphite. This delightfully abstracted Cubist piece depicts a woman in various shades of muted jewel. She peers curiously, at once mysterious and relatable. Done in the playful, explorative style of the highly prolific artist, Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973). En verso, a small inscription reads, "PICASSO. ARCHIVED IN 1972." This framed piece measures approximately 16.25" x 12.25". Image sight measures approximately 11.5" x 7.5".

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) was a painter, sculptor, printmaker, ceramicist, stage designer, poet, and playwright. He devoted his life to the production of art in stunning volume. Early works by Picasso are academic and realistic. Over the decades, he dove into previously uncharted territory -- painting abstractions at the bottoms of empty swimming pools, filling entire studios with pottery and canvases, even posing for long-exposure "light drawing" photo portraits. The less-than-pretty truths of Picasso's biography (such as his notable 'cruel streak') have often been curtailed in favor of the overwhelming cultural gifts he most certainly bestowed. To admire Picasso is delicate territory. To admire Picasso's art is simply understood.
