1692 Turkish SPY Ottoman Letters Writ French Political Satire Marana English

Giovanni Paolo Marana was a political refugee during the reign of Louis XIV in France. He is known primarily for his work ‘Letters Writ by a Turkish Spy’, the first volume, however, is the only volume he is known to have written. The subsequent seven volumes are attributed to various authors.

‘The First Volume of Letters’ is a collection of 102 fictional letters by an Ottoman spy named Mahmut, who also happened to be in the court of Louis XIV. The correspondence in this work covers the mid-17th-century in France are a satirical view of the current state of politics and society in Paris – making slights at figures such as Cardinal Richelieu.

This 1692 English edition was published by Henry Rhodes and translated by Daniel Saltmarsh. Originally written in Arabic, this work saw multiple language translations including Italian and French before the late 17th-century English.
