Lot 0025B Details

Description
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 4th century CE. A beautiful collection of twelve cast-bronze rings, one complete and eleven fragmentary, each with a set intaglio carved from carnelian or mottled pink-hued stone with dark inclusions. The incised details on the nine vermilion carnelian stones include two fish, an alabastron, a left-facing dolphin, a reclining deer, a left-facing eagle, a left-facing rabbit, a grain stalk, and an abstract avian form. The pink stone intaglios bear incised imagery including a dolphin and an abstract avian figure on the fragmentary rings, and a right-facing zoomorphic figure on the intact ring. The bronze components of each ring are covered in fine layers of green and patina. Size of largest intaglio (reclining deer): 0.3" L x 0.25" W (0.8 cm x 0.6 cm).

Condition
Eleven rings are fragmentary. Single complete ring unable to be worn due to heavily-bent band. All items have surface wear and minor abrasions commensurate with age, some small nicks to intaglios, fading to some incised intaglio imagery, and light roughness along bronze components. Nice earthen deposits and green patina throughout bronze components.
