Description
JAN VAN CHELMINSKI (POLISH, 1851–1925), OIL ON CANVAS, CANVAS SIZE: H 28", W 40 1/2", TROIKA IN THE SNOW Signed lower left; gilt frame. Provenance: American Art Galleries, Madison Square South, NYC, January 6, 1911 (label now lost but was attached to the verso when it was originally appraised by Eric Lund in 2009 - see appraisal history below); Hudson's Gallery, Detroit, MI 1930's (no label, family oral history only) and family owned ever since. Original replacement value appraisal in 2009 by Eric Lund (G.B. Kuehnle Co.) for $23,000. Updated appraisal for replacement value, Aug. 13, 2014 by Eric D. Lund for $21,000. Original and updated appraisals are both in the consignor's file.
Condition
UV clean; overall craquelure/cracking is stable; has 5 or 6 unusual small circles/dots along the horizon line to the left of the troika that do not fluoresce under UV light but appear to make no sense being there; not lined or patched; later frame with losses, cracks, some loss of patina. rf
