Description
PENNSYLVANIA DECORATED STONEWARE BATTER JUG, salt-glazed, "3" quart capacity mark, shouldered form with flat-top collared rim, incised shoulder ring, open-loop handle supports, protruding spout, applied arched handle at reverse base, and original bail handle, Albany-slip glazed interior. Brushed cobalt around supports, spout, arched handle, and across capacity mark. Probably Cowden and Wilcox, Harrisburg, PA. Fourth quarter 19th century. 7" H, 5 3/4" D rim.
Undamaged. Glazed-over chip to spout interior, as made. Narrow loss and wear to wooden handle.
Provenance: From the 50-plus year collection of the late Joan M. Wentz, Germansville, PA.
