Freshfield, one-time president of the Alpine Club and Honorary Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society, gives an important account of his mountaineering activities in the Caucasus, between the Black Sea and the Caspian. This is considered a  primary work on the Caucasus and the "magnum opus" of one of "the greatest mountain explorers. he was one of the most scholarly and sensitive of mountain writers"  - W.R. The striking photographs are finely reproduced in photogravure - most are by Vittorio Sella. an Italian photographer and mountaineer, whose photographs of mountains are regarded as some of the finest ever made. Bookplate in both volumes.
