Description
GUNTHER GERZSO (1915-2000) Title: Untitled, Medium: Oil on canvas panel, Size: 16 x 11.75 in, Date: c. 1973-83. (Attrib.). Was a Mexican painter and set designer best known for his architectonic and rectilinear abstractions. His work was influenced by the architecture of Le Corbusier, the paintings of Paul Klee, and the stage design of avant-garde European theater. Born on June 17, 1915 in Mexico City, Mexico, Gerzso went on to live with his uncle Dr. Hans Wendland, a notable collector of Modern art in Lugano, Switzerland in 1924. After moving back to Mexico in 1931, he began to study set design. In 1941, he fell in with a group of European Surrealist painters who had fled Europe to Mexico City during World War II, including Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. Gerszo was the recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1973, and today his works are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hirshorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C., the San Diego Museum of Art, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, among others. He died on April 21, 2000 in Mexico City, Mexico.
