Egyptian Terracotta Harpocrates Figure

Lot 0131 Details

Description
**Originally Listed At $300**

Egypt, Ptolemaic to Roman periods, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A detailed, mold-made figure depicting Isis-Hathor (whose head is lost) holding the child Harpocrates with his trademark conical hat. During the Ptolemaic and Romano-Egyptian periods, Isis-Hathor, Harpocrates, and a third god, Serapis, formed the Triad of Alexandria, a cult for worshipping three deities that combined Greek and Roman gods with Egyptian ones. Ptolemy introduced this worship as a way to unify the cultures under his rule. Isis-Hathor was connected to beliefs about childbirth and fertility, and Harpocrates (a Greek version of Horus) was the god of silence, secrets, and confidentiality. Isis and Harpocrates are often depicted together as here, with her holding his childlike figure. Size: 2.65" W x 5.75" H (6.7 cm x 14.6 cm); 6.05" H (15.4 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, USA collection
