Historic Americana
1864-Dated Civil War Hand-Wrought Needlework Sampler
1864-Dated Civil War Period, Hand-Wrought Needlework Sampler, Signed by “B T,” Very Fine.
This large mid-19th Century Civil War Period embroidered Needlework Sampler is dated “1864” by “B T.” Needlework Samplers allowed young women to practice their craft, and have become highly collected for their social history and window to the past. There are some scattered small holes within the fabric and along the left far edge, as shown. This Sampler measures 12.5” x 19.5” and is tipped to larger linen matte of 17” x 21” for display. Cream-off white color linen fabric and a dark gray perhaps blue thread are in good condition with five full alphabets and several images of Birds, Dogs and a Cornucopia. At the bottom center is the date “1864” and maker’s initials “B T.” This Sampler is ready to frame and display.
